Kruunuvuorenranta Waste Transfer Station

Description

Consolis Parma provides copper/rust-coloured 3D facade elements

A new waste-processing centre has been built in the Kruunuvuorenranta district, a brand new Helsinki neighbourhood in Finland.

The construction project was challenging as the shape of the building, and trapezium-shaped elements necessitated a precise order of installation. Parma manufactured the façade, which comprises four different types of triangular concrete elements, each having a particular 3D diamond-shaped surface design. There are only four patterns, but the way the elements are assembled make it seem like the surface is complex and ever-changing.

The concrete facade of the building has been chemically stained to obtain a reddish-brown, almost rust-like patina, which is reminiscent of the autumn tones of the environment and blends seamlessly with the landscape. Finnish sculptor Pertti Kukkonen developed this staining process where the colour-forming substances react with the surface cement to form the rust-like tone on the surface.
